Periodontics Q & A

What is periodontics?

You’ve probably been reminded of the importance of daily brushing and flossing since you were young. Brushing and flossing your teeth help keep your teeth and gums free from disease-causing plaque and bacteria.

However, sometimes brushing and flossing aren’t enough, and your gums and surrounding tissues can develop inflammatory conditions. These conditions, which include gingivitis and periodontitis, can lead to tooth and gum damage, and, in some cases, even tooth loss.

Fortunately, help is available. Periodontics is the branch of dentistry that focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating these inflammatory gum diseases. It’s a very important branch of dentistry, as it can help you ensure the long-term health of your mouth and teeth.

What is periodontitis?

Due to a combination of genetics, improper oral care habits, and environmental factors, bacteria-trapping plaque can build up on your teeth and in the spaces in between your teeth and gums.

This plaque and bacteria can lead to inflammation in your gums, a condition known as gingivitis. When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress into a more serious condition known as periodontitis.

When you have periodontitis, bacteria-filled pockets of plaque start to develop in between your teeth and gums, causing deep pockets to form. As your gums pull away from your teeth, the surrounding tissues can become diseased and destroyed, eventually leading to tooth loss.

How can periodontics help?

In addition to proper brushing and flossing habits, periodontic treatments aim to eliminate the plaque and bacteria from your teeth, thus effectively treating periodontitis.

In addition, periodontics treatments can serve to repair damaged gums and tissue, saving the nearby teeth. Common periodontic procedures include:

  • Scaling
  • Root planing
  • Bone and tissue regenerative procedures
  • Placement of dental implants
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • Root surface debridement

The team at First Smile Dental are experts at diagnosing and treating periodontal conditions, helping their patients maintain the health and beauty of their smiles for years to come.
